About St. Mary's Soup Kitchen

About St. Mary's Soup Kitchen

A ministry of St. Mary Catholic Church, St. Mary's Catholic Church Soup Kitchen has been operating continuously since 1870. Six days a week we serve our community's poor, homeless and less fortunate. We average more than 300 servings a day.

Each day we serve beverages, pastries, a meat sandwich, a peanut butter sandwich, a 16-ounce cup of soup, and fruit, candy or chips. For four hours we feed bodies and nourish spirits with a hearty "Good Morning," praise songs, and a wish to "Have a blessed day!" More than 50 volunteers from the tri-state area make this possible. We can provide the meal above to a precious child of God with your support of Time, Talent & Treasure and Prayers! We can use volunteers Monday thru Friday from 7:15 AM to 10:00 AM and donations can be made to St Mary's Catholic Church Soup Kitchen.

What will the Lord put on your heart to help the poor & homeless eat a nutritious meal?
If  you are interested in becoming a Soup Kitchen Volunteer, we know you  will find it to be a rewarding ministry and have fun along the way! If  interested, please call us at 901-522-9420.

St. Mary Church And Her Soup Kitchen

Founded in 1860, St. Mary Catholic Church is located in Downtown Memphis, Tennessee.  In October 1864 the cornerstone for St. Marys German Catholic Church of  the Immaculate Conception was laid; on October 30, 1870, the church was  dedicated. As a ministry of St. Mary Catholic Church, St. Mary's  Soup Kitchen has been operating continuously since 1870 when the Franciscan Priests and Brothers were eating breakfast one day when they heard a knock on the door. It was a poor and homeless man asking for food. St. Mary's began serving food out of the back door of the kitchen that day. Eventually,  so many people came that the  Franciscans assigned a  Brother  to the task. The ministry has continued to grow ever since and today St. Mary's Church continues to operate the soup kitchen six days a week.
